On an electric night at the majestic Lusail Stadium, Lionel Messi set the stage for destiny with a virtuoso performance that had the multitudes in awe. His penalty kick sparked the onslaught, as he masterminded a two-goal showing from Julian Alvarez that sealed the 3-0 victory over Croatia and took his team to the World Cup final. It was a near-vintage performance from the legendary Argentine, and it’s sure to be remembered as one of the much famous moments in soccer history.

The crowd wanted Messi moments, and he delivered several times. None were as spectacular as his assist for the third goal, though. With a burst of speed and agility, he glided past Mislav Orsic, leaving him in the dust. But Josko Gvardiol was clinging to him like a child, denying him room and time to twist or shoot the pass. Despite the physical pressure from a player 20 years younger, Messi kept his shape and eventually found a way to deliver the perfect pass. Messi dragged Julian Alvarez closer and closer to the keeper, then suddenly stopped and turned, escaping his clutches and cutting the ball back into Alvarez’s path. The latter then expertly slotted in from just six yards, and it was as if Messi was determined to make a masterpiece of assists in the World Cup. His ambition was undeniable at that moment, and it was a truly very beautiful thing to witness.

Croatia, who were runners-up at the 2018 Russia World Cup, were undone by some uncharacteristically poor defending in their semi-final exit – they’re second since their tournament debut in 1998 when they lost to eventual champions France. For the Croats, it was much disappointing end to a tournament that promised so much. It was a close match, but then an inch-perfect lofted ball from Fernandez caught out the Croatian defense. Alvarez latched on to it, expertly slotting the ball past the onrushing Livakovic, who collided with the striker and forced Italian referee Daniele Orsato to point to the spot.
