Can Mbappe pass Messi?

Coming into the Qatar World Cup, Kylian Mbappe had already made quite a name for himself. At just 21 years, Mbappe already has a very decorated career, the 2018 World Cup champion also won the 2021 UEFA Nations League winner. At club level, Mbappe is ranked among the best in the World, since his debut for Paris Saint- Germain in 2017, his name has gradually rose to inclusion in conversations about the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. At the 2018 World Cup, Mbappe made his debut and scored a total of 4 goals to help Les bleus win it all. In France’s 1-0 group stage win over Peru, Mbappe scored his maiden World Cup at just the age of 19, this made him the youngest French goal scorer in World Cup history. In the same tournament, he was named man of the match in a 4–3 win over Argentina, scoring twice and drawing a foul in the box which was converted by Antoine Griezmann who opened score from the penalty spot.  Mbappé was the second teenager to score two goals in a World Cup match after Pelé in 1958. In the 2018 World Cup finals, Mbappé scored against Croatia and France won 4–2. He became the second teenager, after Pelé, to score in a World Cup Final, finishing the tournament with four goals. Pelé congratulated him on social media, and stated “welcome to the club”.

The Ronaldo-Messi club

Football fans all over the world have been debating on who is greater between Messi and Ronaldo for as long as they have been playing. Despite Mbappe’s name being brought up frequently in such conversations, he still has a long way again as the Leo and Ronaldo are way ahead when it comes to career accomplishments. Winning the World Cup has been considered a possible tiebreaker between the two if either of them wins it in Qatar, Mbappe however has won it before with France who are contenders in 2022.

In his bid to win the trophy again, Mbappe scored his 8th and 9th World Cup goal in their round of 16 match against Poland. With this he passed Maradona and Ronaldo in total goals at the tournament, and tied Messi.

Can Mbappe win the golden boot?

In Russia 2018 when Harry Kane won the golden boot, Mbappe was tied in second place with Lukaku, Griezemann, Ronaldo and Cheryshev at 4 goals. In the highly contested race for the golden boot in Qatar, Mbappe leads all goal scorers with five goals. Currently no one else has managed to score four, Messi, Goncalo, Gakpo, Rashford, Giroud, Valencia, Morata, Richarlison and Saka are all tied at number two with three goals each.
